Looks like that Air Asia flight that made the press yesterday lost a fan blade. That will give you a good case of the shakes.

I don’t think speed tape will fix that.

no, it won’t, because that failure was contained. Just like the engine was designed to do. they went back and landed safely.

This is what used to happen (20 years ago and even before that) when a jet engine came apart:

Kinja'd!!!

that uncontained failure killed two people and injured 5 more.

Seems like that could have gone much worse. The comments on the FP on this incident are so, so stupid.

yes, and? AirAsia 7237 turned around and landed. Two died and five more were seriously hurt on DL1288.

Yeah, this is a design condition and while not awesome it isn’t something to freak about.

That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw the story. I want to know where it went.

As For Sweden said and see the video. Shakes. I am also more familiar with that -88 incidant than most.

I wasn’t pointing fingers or anything. As you said the aircraft landed safely and the case contained the blade as per design. The video clearly showed the cabin shaking. Hence the humor at a situation that ended safely. Also the modes of failure between the fan blade failure and a fan hub failure are quite different.

You can fix almost anything with speed tape. Almost.

I never realized that would still shake after it was shut down. But those freewheel, right? So it makes sense that they’d shake at 500 mph.

yep - the first thing I though was, “where the heck did it go?”

Kinda figured it shed a blade, but the report I read yesterday mentioned the turbine section. Which they were clearly wrong about. Dopes.

Haven’t seen a mess like that since QF32 in November 2010. But even with the IPT disc letting go that T900 still remained more or less intact.

You aren’t using enough speed tape.

Jet engines will freewheel pretty easily with air moving through them.

Makes sense - never thought about it before, and sure as heck hope to never experience it.

Jet engines are pretty nifty. You can turn the input with your hand and create a noticeable airflow out the exhaust.

Wasn’t turbine failure what caused that Iowa City crash in the 80's? Never seen a plane cartwheel like that...

Just throw some wheel weights on the fan and send it back to the gate!
